I still can’t believe what happened on that unforgettable day long ago. It was the day when a giant named Goliath challenged the entire Israelite army, and no one—especially not me—thought my little brother would be the one to stand up and face him. But David proved us all wrong, and what happened next became a story we would never forget.
For days, our army had been camped on one hill, staring across the valley at the Philistines on the other side. Every day, Goliath, the biggest man we had ever seen, challenged us to send someone to fight him. But no one wanted to face Goliath. He was huge, covered in heavy armor, and carried weapons that could easily crush anyone who came near him.
One morning, David, our youngest brother, showed up in the camp. He wasn’t a soldier—he had just come to bring us some food from home. “What are you doing here?” I asked angrily. “You’re supposed to be watching the sheep.” But David, being David, started asking questions about Goliath. “Why isn’t anyone fighting him?”
We tried to tell David to mind his own business, but he wouldn’t listen. He went to the king and volunteered to fight the giant himself!
Before we knew it, David was walking with his sling in his hand to a nearby stream and grabbed 5 smooth stones, with nothing but a sling and five smooth stones. “You’re crazy, David” I called out after him, “What makes you think that you, a shepherd boy, can defeat a giant?” But he wasn’t afraid.
Then my brother swung his sling, and with one quick shot, he hit the giant square in the forehead. Goliath fell, defeated, and the Philistine army ran away. After a moment of silence, our army began to shout and cheer with excitement. My mouth fell open in shock, and I rubbed my eyes in disbelief.
That day, David showed us that courage doesn’t come from being big or strong—it comes from trusting in God, who is bigger and more powerful than anyone or anything. We may have been his older brothers, but David taught us a lesson we’ll never forget even the smallest person can make a difference when they have faith in God.
